What are Executive Function Skills?
The executive function skills are a set of processes that all have to do with managing oneself and one's resources in order to achieve a goal. It is an umbrella term for the neurologically-based skills involving mental control and self-regulation.
These skills relate to such things as student's attention, motivation, planning, organizing, goal setting, monitoring task completion, and using time and strategies effectively.

How do Executive Function Skills Relate to Learning?
Students use Executive Function Skills to:
- Plan and prioritize school tasks
- Monitor progress on tasks
- Maintain their focus and motivation to complete tasks
- Manage homework time
- Plan projects and see them through to completion
- Manage distractions when working
- Notice problems as they arise and problem-solve to make needed changes
- Make use of external organizational systems to keep track of materials and belongings
